Defence
The Defence Section seeks to foster ever stronger bilateral relations with the armed forces of Indonesia (TNI) as a positive demonstration of the UK's commitment to security in the South East Asian region. Looking more broadly the Defence Section also seeks to assist with stability and good relations around regionally by providing opportunities for nations to work together and improve understanding.
Whilst this relationship is broad ranging in concept, the Defence Section places particular emphasis in helping the TNI improve its capacity to conduct Peace Support Operations and to assist with border security and maritime security issues.
The UK, through the Defence Section, is also a significant contributor to the newly formed Indonesian Defence University (UNHAN) with its project to sponsor a master's degree in Defence and Security Management. Located within the International Defence and Security Studies Faculty the 2 year syllabus is delivered in English using a combination of local academic staff and lecturers from Cranfield University in the UK. The course is aimed at developing a core of military and civilian students that are intellectually equipped with the knowledge and skills for the effective management of resources in the defence and wider security sector. Each course takes 30 students; 20 from the TNI and 10 from the civilian sector. Recrruiting for the next Cohort (Cohort 5) which commences on 21 July is already complete. Recruiting for Cohort 6 will be announced in early 2010.Defence activities:
